Wilson' Creek National Battlefield is located near Republic, MO, and preserves the site of the Civil War battle of the same name fought here August 10, 1861, the first major Civil War battle west of the Mississippi River. The Confederate Army defeated the Union troops on this day at this site, but proved unable to hold control of Missouri and were ultimately defeated at the Battle of Pea Ridge, solidifying Union control of the state.
