Under a 1990 Congressional mandate, the National Park Service, at the direction of the Department of the interior, commissioned a study to document the Underground Railroad as a national historic priority. The Park Service put together a diverse study group made up of advisors, analysts, activists and consultants. One of the outcomes of that effort was to produce this Study Guide which provided not only recommendations but research data as well for the documentation, preservation and interpretation of the sites and structures of the Underground Railroad throughout the nation. This document not only speaks to the expansion of the outreach of National Park services but it is a treasure trove of textual data. Some of the more significant features found in this research study, in addition to the more long-rage actionable recommendations to the Park Service, include the following:*a set of foundational concepts to guide the work of commemorating the Underground Railroad; *a set of seven gate-fold maps on land rail, and sea routes;*more than two dozen pages of state by state charts documenting sites and structures, which detail actual households and participants associated with the Underground Railroad;* two gate-fold charts to support the environmental impact assessment.
