It was published in its Historical Handbook Series by the National Park Service, Washington, D.C., 1952 (Revised 1957). The Statue of Liberty, one of the world's most famous symbols and a beacon of liberty for millions, had been proclaimed a national monument by Presidential proclamation in 1924. Thirty-two years later the island on which it stands was renamed Liberty Island by a joint resolution of Congress.
